Marblehead Treasures Above and Below: A Journey of Discovery 2022

The Artist team of David Fichter, Yetti Frenkel, and Joshua Winer collaboratively designed, fabricated and installed two large glass mosaic murals for a brand new school in Marblehead MA. The team was selected by competition in 2020 and spent several months developing designs in collaboration with the Marblehead community. An exterior mosaic is seen from outside the school and is located directly above an interior mosaic. Both mosaics can be viewed together at night with special lighting. The exterior mosaic features imagery of exploration and adventure in the town of Marblehead and its important history. The interior mural features an underwater fantasia, where students explore both school activities and the wildlife of the New England coast. In addition, the artist Liane Noddin worked extensively on the interior mosaic.

Shrewsbury Library Garden Mosaics

Shrewsbury Library Garden Mosaics are located on three sections of retaining walls in a garden outside of the Children's Room. The themes of the mosaics connect images of children reading with imaginary story garden backgrounds. One mosaic is located in the reconstructed original doorway of the library, now called the Artemas Ward Annex. The mosaics were commissioned as part of a renovation of the building. The mural was designed and built by David Fichter with assistance of Liane Noddin, Stephanie Cordova,

The Moses Mosaics 2020

The Moses Mosaic is mounted on the Robert and Janet Moses Youth Center entrance facade on Harvard St. in the Port. It was funded by Cambridge Arts through the Flow (Percent for Art) Grant. It was created with students, staff and community volunteers from the Port Community during 2019-2020. The themes of the mural celebrate Cambridge youth and families. It also highlights the lives and values of Bob and Janet Moses, Cambridge residents who were at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's. The mosaic includes portraits of Bob and Janet Moses, along with quotations from Ella Baker and Bob Moses.

Together, We Go Far 2019

The mural theme, Together We Go Far, represents the ways in which members of the Cabot Elementary School community have cared for each other and helped each other grow since the school's original opening in 1929. The mosaic was created by the Cabot school students, staff, and families for the entrance of their newly renovated school. Artist Liane Noddin assisted in the project.

Community Art Center Mosaic

The Community Art Center Mosaic is a collaborative glass mosaic created with the students and staff of the Community Art Center, a wonderful 80 year old arts organization in the Port Neighborhood of Cambridge. The mosaic is located on the front of the art center. The artist worked with students and staff to design the mosaic based on the last 80 years of community arts activities that the organization had been a part of. The artist was also assisted by Liane Noddin and Louise Marks in making and installing the mosaic.

Everyone Learns, Everyone Belongs 2019

"Everyone Learns, Everyone Belongs" was created for a lobby wall in the new Hastings Elementary School. It was made in collaboration with the school art teacher, students K-5, and the school community. The imagery is based on drawings made by the students and woven together into a design. Artist Liane Noddin assisted with the students building the mosaic.

Our Backyard Wetlands, Zervas Elementary School Mosaic

"Our Backyard Wetlands" was created by the Zervas School Community for their new school lobby. During a mosaic residency, students, staff and families worked for 3 weeks to construct a mosaic mural based on the artist's design which grew out of the students' drawings. Art teacher Rachel Simkins worked with students from K-5 to make drawings from the theme. In addition to the lobby mural, students also made smaller mosaic cutouts of butterflies that were installed through out the lobby, stairs and at each elevator entrance.

Village School Mosaic: Land and Sea
   6 ft X 12 ft   Village School, Marblehead, MA    [Glass mosaic on cement board.]
The Village School Mosaic which is installed on an exterior wall at the front of the school, was created in collaboration with the 4th grade students and teachers. Students made drawings based on the theme of land and sea in their town and they were then put together by the artist into an overall design. Over a two week period, 200 4th grade students built the mosaic on tabletops in their art room. The residency was funded by the Friends of Marblehead Public Schools. Some of the mosaic images includes landmarks such as the Chandler Hovey Lighthouse, Abbot Hall, and a view of Marblehead from the sea.

Andrews Middle School River Life Mosaic
   5 ft. X 12 ft.    Andrews Middle School, 3000 Mystic Valley Pkwy,Medford, MA    [Glass mosaic on hardiebacker board]
The Andrews Middle School River Life Mosaic was created during an artist residency in collaboration with art teacher Peter Gallagher. The students (grades 6, 7, and 8, researched and drew images that reflected on the natural history of their town, focusing on the Middlesex Fells, the Mystic River, the Mystic Lakes, and the Brooks Estate. The artist assembled the drawings into an overall design which students built out of glass tile over a 10 day period.
The mosaic was then cemented on to cement boards and grouted.
The project was funded by a STARS grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a grant from the Medford Arts Council, and the PTO.

Larry Combest Community Health and Wellness Center Mosaics

As part of the expansion of the Larry Combest Community Health and Wellness Center, Texas Tech University selected the team of David Fichter and Joshua Winer to collaboratively design, create and install a large mosaic (four panels) based on themes of community, health, education and culture. There is a border at the bottom based on Texas quilt patterns that was created with community volunteers during several community workshops.

Angier Garden Mosaic:Minds In Bloom

The Angier Garden Mosaic was created collaboratively with the students, staff and parents of the Angier Elementary School. It was designed by David Fichter based on drawings submitted by students (K-5) from the school under the direction of the art teacher Deborah Kramer. The project was initiated in the original school building which was being torn down to make way for a brand new school building, where the mosaic was installed. The mosaic is about the school garden and incorporates imagery of growth in nature as a metaphor for elementary school students growing and changing over time.

A Home is Built With Love and Dreams

This glass mosaics was designed and built by David Fichter and Joshua Winer for a new affordable housing project sponsored by Homeowners Rehab (HRI) in Cambridge. It is a memorial for Geneva Malenfant, a Cambridge housing activist who lived in Cambridgeport.

Argenziano In Full Bloom

Argenziano in Full Bloom is a collaborative mural with the students and staff of the Argenziano School (ages K-8). Students created drawings and paintings with the art teacher Diana Taremi based on the theme of flowers representing their country of origin. Many of the students in the school come from recent immigrant backgrounds. The theme was also developed by studying the flower paintings of artist Georgia O'Keefe. Students, teachers, and families worked with the artist to create a glass mosaic based on the theme.

Healey on the Mystic

Healey On The Mystic Mosaic was a collaborative project with the students (k-8) and staff of the Healey School. The theme was the wildlife, flora and fauna of the nearby Mystic River. Students made drawings with their art teacher, which the artist put together into an overall design, highlighting in the center a red tail hawk, which is also the school mascot.

Faces and Places of Lawrence combines images of Lawrence youth in various activities with buildings and landmarks in their city.
The design was put together incorporating paintings and drawings made by students.

Tree of Life Mandala Mosaic

This mosaic was created with participants of the 2014 New Hampshire Arts Education Partnership Conference in Greenfield NH. It was sponsored by the New Hampshire State Council On the Arts. The artist designed the mosaic which was then built during the conference and later installed at Elliot Hospital.

Smith School Love of Learning Tree

The Smith School Love of Learning Tree Mosaic was created in collaboration with Smith students and art teacher Laura Marotta.
Students created drawings based on the theme of learning both in school and home. The artist created a design incorporating the drawings which served as the template for building the mosaic.

The Seasons of Chesterfield

The Seasons of Chesterfield was a collaborative mosaic project with the students (K-8) and staff of the Chesterfield School.
The theme was generated by drawings created by the students with the art teacher Veda Crewe. The mosaic was built by students in the art room over a two week period with the assistance of parents and staff.
