Lamitye: the Haitian/ American Friendship Mural
All walls of the cafeteria   The Graham and Parks Alternative School, Cambridge, Massachu    [Bas relief ceramic tiles]
The mural consists of bas relief sculpted ceramic tiles mounted on painted backgrounds over numerous wall surfaces (walls, columns, and friezes) in the school cafeteria. During a 60 day artist residency, I worked with all students and teachers in the school, which is home to the Haitian Bilingual Program, to develop cross cultural themes that bridged the different cultures, histories, environments, and traditions of the students population. Each classroom developed a sub-theme of the overall idea that was age appropriate and curriculum based. For example, a first/second grade class studying insects, created a 30 ft. frieze of insects from Haiti and New England. A 5th grade class captured scenes of the American Revolution, while another group depicted scenes from the Haitian Revolution.

During a 25 day residency, all students (grades K-8) and teachers in this elementary school, designed and glazed ceramic tile self-portraits. The tiles were grouped according to grades and installed in a repeating geometric pattern across a wall of the lobby.
